Making an herbal salve can be a really simple process, and that is exactly what I am going to share with you today. There are many ways you can change recipes, or a million recipes for salves and creams, but if you know the basics, then you are good to make pretty much any salve recipe.

The proportions are simple:

1 part herbal infused oil

1/2 part coconut oil

1/2 part beeswax

That’s it!

Place your infused oil in a pot on low and add your coconut oil and beeswax. Stir gently until all of the oils and wax are melted together.

You should have prepared your containers for your salves and have them ready on the counter.

When your oils and wax are melted together, remove from heat. If you were to add essential oils, you could add them at this point. Then pour carefully into your prepared containers. Allow to harden, then cap them and label well.

That’s it! Like I said, there are many, many recipes out there to follow. But a few things you should know.

It is hot enough that the coconut oil melted in its own container, but the salve I have is solid still because of the beeswax.
  1. If you live in a hot climate, you will need to add a little more beeswax so your salve doesn’t melt in your purse or car, or even cabinet.
  2. You can substitute the coconut oil with a butter of some sort, like Shea or something. You may have to experiment with the textures and solidity a bit, so make a small batch when you are testing.
  3. Both the coconut oil and the beeswax have some amazing health properties on their own, so your salve is full of wonderful potential.

And that is really all there is to it! Once you have mastered the basics of salve making, then move onto more complicated recipes and formulas.

With the oils I have that are singles, I could easily combine Plantain – Plantago major, and Yarrow – Achillea millefolium, and make a salve. This salve would be ideal in an herbal first aid kit. You can combine any single infused oils and get something wonderful!

Get creative!
